Presentation: This introductory workshop on addiction and recovery is designed to raise awareness and understanding of the dynamics and impact of addiction on people whom we serve. It will cover the neurological basis of addiction; mental, behavioral, emotional, and spiritual dimensions; stages of change; recovery; motivational techniques and resources.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the neurological process of addiction;
  2. Explain how addiction manifests on various aspects of the whole person (mental, physical, emotional and spiritual);
  3. Identify the five stages of change and how they can be utilized for treatment;
  4. Match intervention strategies to stages; and
  5. Assess appropriate resources and approaches for the treatment of addictive disorders.

Paul Kiernan

State Opioid Program Coordinator

Paul Kiernan, LADC is a licensed alcohol and drug counselor, licensed with the State of New Hampshire. Mr. Kiernan has been working in the field treating addictive disorders since 2006. He has provided direct clinical services in residential withdrawal management, outpatient counseling, and Intensive Outpatient services. Paul provided a variety of interventions in these settings including group and individual counseling, case management, evaluation and assessment, crisis management, referral, hospital based consultation, and psychoeducation.

Mr. Kiernan has extensive training in Motivational Interviewing, Addiction Basics, Treatment planning and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria 3rd edition. He has also provided training to direct service clinicians from all over the state of New Hampshire, primarily in the ASAM 3rd Edition Criteria and its application. Throughout his career Mr. Kiernan has created clinical tools, provided extensive training, support and consultation for the New Hampshire substance use disorder treatment system. Paul is currently a field representative at the New Hampshire State Employee Assistance Program.
