Join Elliot Health System and the NH Training Institute on Addictive Disorders in a full-day, free symposium covering various aspects of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Fourth Edition. The day will include a keynote presentation by Hazelden Betty Ford and a moderated panel of people who work at different levels of care and how they utilize and apply ASAM criteria at that level.

  1. Define updates from the ASAM Criteria Third Edition to the Fourth Edition;
  2. Identify the updates’ potential impact on clinical care quality, ease of workflow, and approval rates;
  3. Discuss how these changes will impact insurance justifications and approvals;
  4. Describe how ASAM Criteria are utilized in different levels of care; and
  5. Recognize opportunities to evolve standards and practices in alignment with Fourth Edition Criteria.

Diana Kelly, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) clinician, educator, and Clinical Director at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and serves as an adjunct faculty member at the IU School of Social Work in Indianapolis Indiana. Diana’s primary focus areas include inclusive group work, trauma informed and anti-oppressive clinical practices, and clinical work with Military Veterans and their families. Diana’s direct practice experience involves work with Military Veterans, and those involved with the Justice System. Diana has a strong passion for trauma informed work with Women Veterans and advocating for the inclusive treatment of minority Veterans.  Diana has a strong passion for teaching, mentoring, group facilitation and has a strong belief in the magic of group work! She is a graduate of the IU School of Social Work in Indianapolis Indiana.

Paul Kiernan

State Opioid Program Coordinator

Paul Kiernan, LADC is a licensed alcohol and drug counselor, licensed with the State of New Hampshire. Mr. Kiernan has been working in the field treating addictive disorders since 2006. He has provided direct clinical services in residential withdrawal management, outpatient counseling, and Intensive Outpatient services. Paul provided a variety of interventions in these settings including group and individual counseling, case management, evaluation and assessment, crisis management, referral, hospital based consultation, and psychoeducation.

Mr. Kiernan has extensive training in Motivational Interviewing, Addiction Basics, Treatment planning and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria 3rd edition. He has also provided training to direct service clinicians from all over the state of New Hampshire, primarily in the ASAM 3rd Edition Criteria and its application. Throughout his career Mr. Kiernan has created clinical tools, provided extensive training, support and consultation for the New Hampshire substance use disorder treatment system. Paul is currently a field representative at the New Hampshire State Employee Assistance Program.

Jennifer Houston, LICSW, MLADC is a dually licensed master's level clinician. She began her career providing direct care to children, adolescents, and adults with developmental disabilities and mental health diagnoses. In her desire to expand her impact in helping others, and seeing the immense impact of addiction on New Hampshire communities, she transitioned into the addiction field 6 years ago. She worked as a direct care counselor for adults and adolescents in group and individual counseling. Recognizing the need of an underserved population, Jennifer returned to school in 2013 to obtain her graduate degree where she continued to focus on treatment of individuals struggling with addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. Jennifer utilizes a solution focused approach to help individuals identify their own strengths and use them to propel themselves into a healthier lifestyle. She takes a holistic approach with individuals, working with them to develop a better sense to self worth. Jennifer is intuitive, empathic, and focused on helping clients achieve their goals, identifying the solution that works best for them and empowering them to take their first action steps.

The Doorway at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital

Peter Fifield, LCMHC, EDD is the Director of Behavioral Health Services at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, NH.  He has a doctoral degree from the University of New England and is dual licensed in NH as a clinical mental health counselor and a master licensed alcohol and drug counselor.  Peter has been a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers since 2011 and specializes in training for mental health and medical providers. He finds great satisfaction working with groups who are seeking to provide more supportive, equitable and effective care to clients. For over twenty years he has been working in the field of trauma informed integrated behavioral health and the treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
