Presentation: Motivational interviewing (MI) is a client-centered, evidence-based, goal-oriented method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence with the individual. This active, skill-building workshop provides participants with knowledge of the spirit and micro skills of the model and provides opportunities to practice the approach. Participants will complete the workshop with a good understanding of MI, and are encouraged to take the Intermediate and Advanced MI workshops to develop proficiency in this method.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe several core concepts of Motivational Interviewing;
  2. Demonstrate the various micro skills of Motivational Interviewing; and
  3. Evaluate the use of Motivational Interviewing skills in conversation and provide constructive feedback.

Jennifer Carvalho, LMHC, is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and a certified MITI coder who provides individualized MI feedback and coaching as part of professional coding teams. With over five years of MI practice and participation in more than a dozen formal trainings, Jennifer brings depth of experience and a strong commitment to MI fidelity and skill development. Her MI trainings emphasize experiential learning, reflective practice, and authentic collaboration, helping individuals move beyond techniques to apply MI naturally in real-world conversations.

Jennifer holds a graduate degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Massachusetts–Dartmouth and is an EMDR-trained therapist with experience treating anxiety, depression, trauma, and chronic pain. She integrates MI with CBT, ACT, mindfulness, and trauma-focused approaches, ensuring her trainings and clinical work remain grounded in evidence-based practice and the spirit of compassion and partnership.
