A 1.5-Hour Training with Sheena Bice, DMSc, MLADC, CCTP & Casey Lancaster
Virtual via Zoom | 12pm-1:30pm
Content level: Intermediate
Presentation: This presentation combines the lived experience of a Marine Corps combat veteran with clinical expertise to explore the complex challenges surrounding veteran suicide. Through personal storytelling and clinical perspectives, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of suicide risk factors, warning signs, military related trauma, survivor's guilt, and the difficulties veterans may face when transitioning to civilian life. The session also examines practical prevention strategies, effective communication, early intervention, and the importance of protective factors and support networks. By connecting lived experience with clinical knowledge, this presentation aims to strengthen awareness, reduce stigma, and equip participants with a better understanding of how to support veterans experiencing mental health challenges.
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify the unique stressors and risk factors that make veterans more vulnerable to suicide, with insights from a veteran's lived experience;
- Develop effective communication strategies to engage veterans in crisis, ensuring they feel heard, supported, and understood; and
- Implement intervention and prevention strategies tailored to veterans, including identifying warning signs, facilitating access to care, and promoting protective factors such as community support and connectedness.
