Presentation: The number of family caregivers in the US population has increased significantly in recent years. This training is designed to provide addiction professionals with the essential tools and knowledge needed to support people providing unpaid care for a loved one. Participants will explore interplay between caregiving and substance use as well as strategies to empower caregivers to manage their responsibilities without resorting to problematic substance use and to improve their overall resiliency. By the end of this training, participants will be equipped to support caregivers in managing stress, addressing substance use and strengthening family relationships. Participants will leave with evidence-based techniques to address both caregiver stress and substance use, improving outcomes for caregivers and their families.
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe the relationship between caregiver stress and substance use;
- Explain family dynamics and the impact of substance use on caregiver relationships; and
- Demonstrate the use of strategies for increasing caregiver resiliency.

NH Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors Association has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider. ACEP No 6754. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. NHADACA is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.

Emily Edgerly
Better Life Partners
Emily Edgerly is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor with extensive experience providing substance use disorder counseling, case management, and trauma-informed care. Holding a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University, Emily has dedicated over a decade to serving unhoused and criminal-justice involved individuals with substance use disorders and other related challenges. Currently, Emily is employed full time at Better Life Partners facilitating therapeutic groups and assessments from a harm reduction framework via telehealth. Emily is an advocate for increasing understanding of Substance Use Disorder and reducing systemic barriers for individuals to enter and maintain recovery. In addition to her direct service roles, she has held leadership positions at homeless service providers, syringe service programs and Rockingham County Department of Corrections.
Emily is a member of NAADAC- The Association for Addiction Professionals, and has served on committees such as New Hampshire Clinicians in Corrections and New Hampshire’s Opioid and Brain Injury Taskforce. Emily is a certified trainer for SAMHSA’s GAINS Center Trauma-Informed Response Course for Criminal Justice Professionals. She has extensive experience providing evidence based training and workshops both in-person and virtually. Emily currently lives in Durham, NH with her young daughter and 14-year-old dog. She is a graduate of NH Institute on Disability’s Leadership Program and a life-long familial caregiver.
