A 6-Hour Training with Susan Ward, MS
8:30am-4:00pm
130 Pembroke Road, Suite 150, Concord, NH 03301
Presentation: Suicide is a leading public health issue in the United States, and while it remains difficult to address, it is essential that clinicians, social workers, and social service providers become more in tune with their own thoughts and views about suicide, as well as become more aware of some of the general barriers to suicide prevention. This training is specifically designed for clinical social workers and other community-based mental health and social service providers. Participants will learn about risk and protective factors in adolescents. Warning signs for suicide are explored and effective communication strategies for when an adolescent is at risk is identified. Participants will identify how they can connect effectively with persons at risk. Suicide prevention strategies covered include lethal means reduction, safe messaging, and crisis intervention.
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
- Explain strategies for strengthening the community safety net to reduce suicide risk among adolescents and other populations;
- Describe the roles of lethal means reduction, safe messaging, effective communication, and crisis intervention as components of a comprehensive suicide prevention approach; and
- Identify local and national resources available for adolescents and other individuals at risk of suicide and demonstrate how to appropriately refer clients to these services.
