A 4-Hour Training with Carla Rash, Ph.D

Virtual via Zoom | 9:00am-1:15pm

This training is funded by the New England ATTC and a SOR grant

Presentation: Contingency management (CM) is an effective behavioral intervention that provides tangible reinforcement when target behaviors are completed and objectively verified. The most common approach in CM protocols is to reinforce abstinence, providing monetary rewards or prizes when clients provide objective evidence of abstinence from drugs (e.g., stimulant negative sample).

In this workshop, we will review best practices and guidelines for implementing effective and evidence-based CM protocols in clinical settings. Specifically, we will describe: 1) different types of CM programs (i.e., voucher, prize); 2) best practice suggestions for protocol design and acceptable modifications; 3) most common deviations from evidence-based protocols and how to avoid them; and 4) practical considerations such as funding, supervision, and oversight.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe differences in types of CM programs (voucher versus prize);
  2. List best practices in CM design, including duration, frequency, and magnitude;
  3. List common deviations from evidence-based protocols and how to avoid them; and
  4. Compare/contrast funding options and their implications.
