A 6-Hour Training with Scott Meyer, MSW, Ph.D

Virtual via Zoom | 8:30am-4:00pm

Presentation: This training is designed to maximize worker knowledge, values and skills to develop enhanced capacity for understanding and managing complex cultural factors that are present in client and colleague interactions. Participants will learn how understanding cultural factors in human diversity can efficiently and effectively maximize desired outcomes within existing time and logistical resources across a variety of service delivery settings. The training will address the issue of how to consider using the concepts of cultural competence and cultural humility while simultaneously enhancing the successful completion of work tasks in the most efficient and effective possible fashion. Best practices to prevent barriers to effective engagement with clients will be examined. The use of reflective practice in our clinical, supervisory and administrative work will be explored to heighten our awareness and gain ideas for how to best manage our interactions with clients and colleagues both intra- and inter-organizationally. Issues of transference and countertransference will be examined to deepen our awareness of the nuances of cultural factors related to these types of clinical phenomenon.

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Reflect on concepts of cultural humility and competence when engaging with clients and colleagues;
  2. Demonstrate the techniques to promote the enhancement of cultural comfort zones for themselves, their clients and colleagues; and
  3. Identify what factors in transference and countertransference have potential to impact the quality of interactions both positively and negatively across the range of human diversity.
