Group Counseling with Adolescents: An Interactive Skills-Based Workshop for School and Community Professionals - November 18, 2025

Presentation: This hands-on workshop is designed for school and community-based professionals who have limited experience or training in conducting group counseling with adolescents. Whether you're new to group work or looking to build confidence in this area, this workshop will provide practical tools, techniques, and insights. Participants will explore the unique challenges of forming and scheduling groups in school and community settings. Grounded in a developmental model of group practice, the workshop will examine the evolving needs of adolescent groups and the specific tasks and roles of group leaders at each stage. Attendees will have the opportunity to reflect on their own group experiences, share successes and challenges, and gain strategies to build more effective and meaningful adolescent counseling groups. Through interactive discussions and case examples, we will address key topics such as:

• Ethical considerations in adolescent group work
• Cultural awareness and responsiveness
• Leadership styles and their impact on group dynamics
• Engaging students and navigating resistance to change

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Explain the benefits and challenges of group counseling with adolescents;
2. Explain the importance of assessment before placing an adolescent in a group;
3. Describe the major stages of group development and the challenges specific to each stage;
4. Identify the key role of the counselor and strategies to intervene at each stage of development;
5. Identify the importance of group composition; and
6. Identify the importance of opening and closing statements in group sessions.
