Presentation: Rural communities face distinct barriers to medications for opioid use disorder, including limited provider capacity, geographic isolation, and stigma. This session shares practical clinical, community, and advocacy strategies for integrating services, building trust, and expanding person-centered access to care.
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
- Analyze barriers to medications for opioid use disorder in rural communities and their effects on engagement and outcomes;
- Identify strategies that integrate clinical services with medical interventions in rural recovery-oriented care; and
- Apply approaches that reduce stigma and build trust in rural communities offering medications for opioid use disorder.
Break Information: This training includes two-15 minutes breaks and a 30-minute lunch. Exact break and meal schedule is at the discretion of the presenter and may vary.

Samson Teklemariam, LPC, CPTM, is an executive clinical leader, talent development expert, and seasoned trainer whose career spans direct practice, national workforce initiatives, and leadership within large behavioral health systems. His experience includes correctional settings, private practice, community mental health, schools, substance use disorder treatment programs, and behavioral health facilities. He specializes in co-occurring conditions, clinical supervision, evidence-based practice implementation, culturally responsive care, and leadership development. As Vice President of Clinical Services for Behavioral Health Group, he advances integrated counseling within opioid treatment programs across 22 states; he also serves as NAADAC Southeast Regional Vice President and on the Advisory Council for the National Board for Certified Counselors Minority Fellowship Program.
