Presentation: This innovative training, combining online and in-person components, offers practitioners a comprehensive introduction to the substance use prevention field. Grounded in current research and SAMSHA’s Strategic Prevention Framework, SPH is designed to help practitioners develop the knowledge and skills needed to implement effective, data-driven prevention that reduces behavioral health disparities and improves wellness. It is appropriate for entry-level prevention practitioners, as well as professionals in related fields.
SPF consists of a five-hour, self-paced online module, followed by a four-day/26-hour interactive, in-person training. The online course is entitled “Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training: Building Our Behavioral Health Workforce.”
Introduction to Substance Abuse Prevention: Understanding the Basics (Online): This foundational course offers practitioners new to the field of prevention, or working in related fields, an introduction to the history of prevention, key concepts and definitions, specific drug effects, and an exciting glimpse into the effects of substance use and addiction on the brain. Participants will learn about:
- Basic terminology and facts
- History of substance use and prevention in the US
- Addiction and the brain
- Effects and health risks of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs
In-Person SPF: Application for Prevention Success Training: This 4-day training will be held at 130 Pembroke Road, Suite 150, Concord, NH from 8:30am to 4:30pm daily (6.5 hours of direct training daily). IT will address the following topics:
- Behavioral health
- Institute of Medicine’s Continuum of Care
- Public health approach
- Risk and protective factors
- Developmental perspective
- Application of SAMSHA’s Strategic Planning Framework: assessment, capacity, planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Cultural competence and sustainability
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe public health approach to prevention;
- Describe risk and protective factors;
- Summarize the Institute of Medicine’s Continuum of Care;
- Explain the application of SAMSHA’s Strategic Prevention Framework: assessment, capacity, planning, implementation, and evaluation; and
- Summarize cultural competency and sustainability.

Julie Yerkes, MEd, CPS, is a Certified Prevention Specialist and sits on the NH Prevention Certification Board. She has worked in prevention and education for nearly 20 years, with a focus on strengthening community-school-family connections to support positive youth development. She is the Prevention Program Manager for the New Hampshire Center for Excellence; a resource center for best practices in alcohol and drug prevention and treatment services in New Hampshire. In this role, she currently provides technical assistance to state agencies, regional public health networks and local substance misuse prevention coalitions and providers. Her work focuses on evidence-based strategy selection, implementation, and evaluation, as well as strategic planning.
Marissa Carlson

NH Teen Institute
Marissa Carlson, MS, CPS is the Executive Director of the NH Teen Institute, a leadership development nonprofit working with middle & high school students from around NH & New England in a variety of areas including substance misuse prevention, peer mentoring and creating positive school & community climate. As part of her role at TI, she oversees and facilitates training for youth participants, youth & adult volunteer program staff, and outside behavioral health and education professionals. She is a facilitator and trainer of trainers for multiple workshops developed through SAMHSA systems, is a member of the advisory council of the New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC) and is on the DEI advisory committee for the NH Center for Nonprofits. In addition, she is the President of the Prevention Certification Board of NH, serves on the IC&RC board of directors, and serves as the chairperson of the IC&RC Credentialing Committee. Outside of her prevention work, Marissa is a founding member of Mill City Productions, a theatre company in Western Massachusetts. She graduated from Pomona College with a BA in Psychology, received an MS in Nonprofit Management from Bay Path University, and has been a Certified Prevention Specialist since 2011.
