Presentation: Rural counselors often navigate geographic isolation, limited resources, heightened visibility, and complex community expectations that can strain boundaries and well-being. This session examines those contextual pressures and offers practical strategies for psychological safety, burnout prevention, ethical decision-making, and sustainable self-care.
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify key contextual factors that influence counseling practice in rural communities;
- Analyze how rural practice conditions affect professional boundaries, decision-making, and psychological safety; and
- Identify strategies that support self-care and reduce burnout risk.
Break Information: This training includes two-15 minutes breaks and a 30-minute lunch. Exact break and meal schedule is at the discretion of the presenter and may vary.

Samson Teklemariam, LPC, CPTM, is an executive clinical leader, talent development expert, and seasoned trainer whose career spans direct practice, national workforce initiatives, and leadership within large behavioral health systems. His experience includes correctional settings, private practice, community mental health, schools, substance use disorder treatment programs, and behavioral health facilities. He specializes in co-occurring conditions, clinical supervision, evidence-based practice implementation, culturally responsive care, and leadership development. As Vice President of Clinical Services for Behavioral Health Group, he advances integrated counseling within opioid treatment programs across 22 states; he also serves as NAADAC Southeast Regional Vice President and on the Advisory Council for the National Board for Certified Counselors Minority Fellowship Program.
