Presentation: Social service agencies offer a broad spectrum of programs and services to a wide variety of clients and their ages. Since suicide is a major public health issue, social service agency staff should be trained to recognize individuals at risk for suicide and learn strategies for connecting them to help.
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
- List at least 2 risk factors for suicide;
- List at least 2 protective factors for suicide;
- List at least 2 warning signs for suicide;
- List at least 3 skills for intervening with clients or others at risk and connecting them with appropriate resources;
- Summarize strategies for communicating with parents/guardians/family members or other support persons during crisis situations;
- State insights into confidentiality requirements and communication with others involved in the client’s care or treatment; and
- Describe community resources and strategies to increase suicide prevention efforts through the integration, coordination, and collaboration of community services (schools, mental health, law enforcement, social services, faith communities, etc.).

Ann Duckless, MA has worked for NAMI NH for 16 years in the Connect Suicide Prevention Program, providing suicide prevention, postvention, and mental health trainings to community, military, college, and tribal nation settings. She has also gained over 20 years of experience in the field of substance use continuum of care. Ann’s varied professional work experiences including teaching at the high school and college levels, inpatient and outpatient counseling for substance use disorders, youth prevention community work at the statewide level, and a collaborative systems perspective in dealing with public health issues. Trained as a cultural competence trainer by the Anti-Defamation League, Ann embraces and promotes cultural sensitivity to issues of race, ethnicity, language, religion, disability, and sexual orientation/gender identity.
